We were supposed to escourt a bombing mission but upon reaching the
rendevous point we were attacked by French Nieuports.
In the ensuing fight, I was wounded and forced to land on our side
of the lines. I did manage to damage two Nieuports, but I have no idea how badly.

Dear Mother,
I hope you and father are well. I don't know if you've been notified
yet or not, but I was wounded the other day on my first flight. It
was nothing serious, and I should be returned to duty soon.
We were supposed to be escourting some of our reconnaisance aircraft
when we were attacked by French Nieuports. I think I damaged two,
one appeared to be smoking as it flew away. But since it made it's
side of the lines, I'll never know for sure if I got him or not.
I just wanted to let you know that it was not serious, and that you
shouldn't worry. Our Jasta Fuehrer, Hauptman Boelcke is very good,
he has shot down 20 enemy machines himself!!
I hope to be lucky enough to get one myself.
Well, I have to go now, the doctor is very strict about when I'm to rest.
Love,
Karl

Dear Mother,
I just wanted to let you know to expect a letter from the Kaiser sometime
soon, announcing my Iron Cross, 2nd Class!!
This is for shooting down two Entente balloons.
Tell Father I hope he's not too mad at me for leaving the Cavalry for the
new air service, but I think it's working out for the best.
Love,
Karl.

NARRATIVE
We were supposed to be on Barrage patrol E. of Arras. We were attacked
by British Nieuports, and as they had the better machine, we were all
shot down. I was wounded, Hauptman Boelcke was seriously wounded and
the doctors say he won't fly again. The other two in my flight were killed.
I certainly hope we get those new machines everyone has been talking about.
The Halberstadt is a piece of crap!!

NARRATIVE
I would dearly LOVE to know what idiot decided we should escort a
bombing mission at night!! The Hauptman and I were escourting some
2-seaters on a bombing mission, and I didn't even know the Hauptman
had been shot down!
To think I went on leave after what happened to Hauptman Boelcke,
only to come back and have his replacement killed!!

Dear Mother,
I just wanted to write you let you know I brought down two more of the
enemy. That brings my score to 4. That is HALF of what it took for our
former commander to get the Pour le Merite!! I understand though that
they are considering raising the number of victories needed to get one,
specially since there are a lot of us who are getting close to the old
number 8.
In any event, I hope you and father are well. And I was wondering if you
could find Katie's address for me. I would like to write her, but she
forgot to give me her address.
Love,
Karl

Dear Mother,
I got two more the other day, that makes my current score 7. And,
Manfred, you remember, the quiet one, he shot down Lanoe Hawker!!
They say he was Britain's best!! It was certainly a LONG fight.
we circled overhead while Manfred took him on alone. I thought
we'd run out of fuel first.
Personally, I'd have been happier if we'd captured him, but he was
killed by a single bullet to the head.
Oh, I almost forgot, they're giving me the Iron Cross 1st Class now.
Love,
Karl

Dear Mr. and Mrs. von Hess:
It is with heavy heart that I have to tell you you son Karl was killed two
days ago. He died when his machine crashed into the ground. We do not as
yet know why it happened. Before the crashed he appeared to be ok.
In any event, I am sending all of his personal effects to you in the next
few days. There will be an inquiry into this, but I doubt that much will
come out of it.
Sincerely
Hauptmann Beck
